A new hot spring destination near Taipei! Besides Beitou, Wulai's carbonated hot spring town is a haven for those sensitive to strong smells. This time, we stayed at the Volando Urai Spring Spa & Resort, where every corner—from private baths to scenic mountain views—exudes relaxation!
🌿 Gentle Healing of Carbonated Hot Springs
Unlike the strong sulfuric smell of Beitou's hot springs, Wulai's carbonated springs are mild and odorless. Our room at Volando featured a "private hot spring pool," where the carbonated water left our skin silky smooth, eliminating the need for post-bath skincare! The public hot spring area is nestled among trees, allowing you to soak while listening to birdsong and gazing at lush greenery—instantly forgetting urban stress.
🎵 Romantic Afternoon by the Riverside
The hotel's afternoon "singing bowl and drumming performance" was a delightful surprise! Sitting on the riverside lawn, listening to the harmonious music mixed with the sound of the stream, and feeling sunlight filtering through the treetops—it felt like time had stopped. After the performance, grab a "wasabi ice cream" (NT$80) for a unique blend of salty and sweet flavors.
🍢 Surprises While Strolling Through the Town
▪️ Wild Boar Sausage Delight
A must-try in town is the "wild boar sausage"! Juicy and flavorful, paired with the shop's special wasabi sauce, it's addictive from the first bite. Stroll along "Wulai Old Street" while enjoying it, and pick up some indigenous-style "millet mochi" as souvenirs.
▪️ Mini Train to the Waterfall
Hop on the "Wulai Tourist Mini Train" (NT$50 one-way) for a whimsical ride! The train winds through the forest, leading to the "Wulai Waterfall." From the viewing platform, watch the white cascade crash against the rocks, with mist cooling your face—perfect for beating the summer heat.
🚗 Transportation Guide
1️⃣ Take a taxi from Taipei city to "Xindian MRT Station" (about 30 minutes).
2️⃣ Reserve Volando's "free shuttle service" in advance (must book before 12:00 PM).
3️⃣ Take the shuttle directly to the hotel (about 1 hour, with scenic mountain views along the way).
💡 Essential Tips for Wulai Town
✅ Photo Spots

• Take "full waterfall views" at Wulai Waterfall's viewing platform—early morning is best for fewer crowds.
✅ Food Recommendations
• "Wulai Yunxian Restaurant" for stir-fried wild boar with ferns (NT$220).
• "Grandma's Red Tea" on Old Street for winter melon lemon tea—a refreshing must-try!
✅ Helpful Reminders

Summary: Wulai completely redefined my perception of Taipei's outskirts! With its gentle carbonated springs, healing forest performances, and charming town vibes, it's no wonder it's a top choice for Hong Kongers on long weekends. Next time, I'll bring my parents for a two-night stay to fully experience the "Taiwanese version of Hakone" at a leisurely pace.
