Shifen Scenic Area is developed along the tributaries of the Keelung River, stretching from Houtong and Sandiaoling to Shifenliao. The terrain is carved by rivers into a series of fault lines and unique rock formations with waterfall clusters. Among them, the most famous is Shifen Waterfall, which stands approximately 20 meters high and 40 meters wide, making it Taiwan's largest curtain-style waterfall. Its reverse-tilted rock layers and counter-flowing water create a majestic sight, earning it the nickname "Taiwan's Niagara Falls." The deep pool below the waterfall and the mist above often intertwine with sunlight, creating the dreamy "Rainbow Pool" scenery.
The park features viewing trails such as the Siguangtan Bridge, connecting geological attractions like potholes and the Eyeglasses Cave Waterfall. From the visitor center, it takes about 10–15 minutes to reach the first viewing platform. Continuing onward, visitors can enjoy a full frontal view of the waterfall and the deep pool below.
🚂 Railway Culture and Sky Lantern Atmosphere
Shifen Station and its old street area along the Pingxi Branch Line were once coal transport railways, now transformed into a tourist route. Each train passes through the center of the old street, exuding a nostalgic atmosphere. Visitors can write blessings on sky lanterns by the railway and release them into the sky—a must-do experience for many. The annual Pingxi International Sky Lantern Festival held during the Lantern Festival attracts global attention.
The old street offers a variety of food stalls, with classic snacks like peanut ice cream rolls, stinky tofu, and beverages, adding a lively touch to the railway scene.
