Aletheia University in Tamsui can be reached in 7 minutes by taking bus routes R26 or 837 from Tamsui Station on the Tamsui-Xinyi Line to Fort Santo Domingo Station, then walking for 4 minutes. From downtown Taipei, it takes about 30-40 minutes to reach Tamsui Station on the MRT Red Line. Aletheia University is also a 30-40-minute walk from Tamsui Station to the Aletheia College. Since the two buildings are adjacent, it's a great opportunity to explore and take photos together.
Aletheia University, founded in 1872 by Canadian Presbyterian missionary George Leslie Mackay as Oxford College, is one of the oldest Western-style higher education institutions in Taiwan. Notably, Oxford College, within Aletheia University, was founded by Dr. Mackay in 1882 to cultivate talent in missionary work, medicine, and education. Its origins lie in the Wujin Academy, the oldest Western-style educational institution in Taiwan. In August 1999, it was renamed Jinri University, after the Greek word for "truth," Aletheia. It currently offers 22 departments across five colleges.
Its fame stems from its role as the filming location for the film "Secret," featuring exotic European-style red architecture, fountains, ponds, lush green lawns, and colorful flower gardens. Visiting Jinri University felt like a scene from the film unfolding before my eyes! The stone pavement and old Western-style buildings allowed me to fully experience the unique, tranquil atmosphere of Jinri University. The campus itself is small, so it can be explored in about an hour. The charming pond and red brick walls create a charming atmosphere, making for numerous photo opportunities. However, it's closed on weekends and only open weekdays from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, so it's best to plan your visit accordingly.
