Shifen Waterfall is located in Pingxi District, New Taipei City, about 30 kilometers northeast of central Taipei. It takes about 20 minutes on foot from Shifen Station to the waterfall, passing through Shifen Old Street, which is famous for its sky lanterns. The total travel time, including transfers, is approximately 1.5 to 2 hours, and it is quite convenient to reach by public transportation.
Shifen Waterfall, with a height of about 20 meters and a width of 40 meters, is one of the widest waterfalls in Taiwan and is often referred to as "Taiwan's Niagara Falls." The horseshoe-shaped rock formation creates a spectacular cascade of water, surrounded by lush forests that make you feel completely immersed in nature despite being near the city. The area around the waterfall features well-maintained viewing decks and walking trails, allowing visitors to enjoy the waterfall from various angles. The mist created by the cascading water provides a natural cooling effect, especially refreshing during the summer. Admission is free, and the site is open year-round, making it an accessible and budget-friendly destination.
When I visited, it was a weekday morning, yet there were more tourists than I expected. The walk from Shifen Station to the waterfall was surprisingly pleasant, as the streets lined with small eateries kept the journey interesting. Seeing the waterfall in person was a completely different experience from just looking at photos. The sound of the water was incredibly loud and refreshing, instantly washing away the summer heat. However, be cautious as the stairs can be slippery during or after rain, so wear comfortable shoes. If possible, visit early on a weekday to avoid crowds and enjoy a more relaxed experience!
