[Nikko, Tochigi] Japan's oldest classic resort hotel, a wonderful building with a sense of history

📍Nikko Kanaya Hotel

1300 Kamihachiishicho, Nikko City, Tochigi Prefecture

Access

Tobu Nikko Station (Tobu Railway) - 21 minutes

Nikko Station (JR conventional line) - 24 minutes

Established in 1873

Japan's oldest classic resort hotel.

About 15 minutes walk from Nikko Toshogu Shrine through Shinkyo Bridge.

When you reach the top of the hill, you will see a pure white, classic building...

A London Express was also parked there.

This is the hotel where Lindbergh, Helen Keller, Einstein, and others once stayed,

and the sculptures at the entrance and revolving doors also felt prestigious.

Entering through the revolving doors with their wonderful sculptures...

Classic front desk

Slightly low ceilings and red carpet.

Although it is Western-style, the ceiling is decorated with craftsmanship reminiscent of a shrine, making it a true mix of Japanese and Western styles.

This hotel has a connection with Toshogu Shrine. It is said that one of the carpenters who worked on Toshogu Shrine was in charge of the hotel's interior, and you can see sculptures that look just like those in Toshogu Shrine all over the building. You can also buy the famous "Kanaya Hotel Bread." I felt the splendor of the hotel, which has remained unchanged through four eras, from the Meiji to the Taisho, Showa, and Heisei eras. "Exhibition Room: Kanaya Time" is located at the back left of Nikko Kanaya Hotel. This is the office of Kanaya Shinichi, the second-generation owner of Kanaya Hotel. He would watch the guests and employees who visited Kanaya every day from here. This exhibition room displays valuable equipment and collections. You can see that many old batteries, time recorders, and electric heaters were used, which were quite fashionable and high-end products for the time. Opening hours: 9am-5pm

Admission: Free
