🏯🇯🇵The place we're going to visit today is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It's Nikko, Tochigi Prefecture, Japan.
Nikko is about two hours from Tokyo and can be reached by car or train. It's a mountain town filled with nature, waterfalls, forests, temples, and shrines of historical significance. It's also a World Heritage City and a place of natural beauty, especially during the changing leaves.
Nikko is divided into two zones: the World Heritage Zone and the Nature Zone.
Let's start with the World Heritage Zone.
Popular places to explore are accessible by foot, with World Heritage signs posted. Once you're in this zone, park your car and explore the surrounding area. 🚶♀️🚶🚶♂️
Starting with:
Toshogu Shrine, dedicated to the Shogun, is decorated with mythical creatures,
including three monkeys, a dragon, and an imaginary elephant.
Futarasan Shrine is a shrine with a legend about a mountain deity. The shrine is surrounded by large trees.
Rinnoji Temple is the most important temple in Nikko.
🍦Walk a bit further and you'll reach the tourist information center and a museum inside. It's a great place to take a break from all the walking. Stop for some delicious real milk ice cream. We each had two, and our bellies were bursting.
🌁After a refreshing walk outside, you'll find Shinkyo Bridge, a sacred red bridge over the Daiya River. It's a signature attraction of Nikko. We often see it on posters promoting tourist attractions.
🍃When we visited in September, the weather was starting to cool down, but the leaves were still green. If you visit during the autumn foliage season, it'll be like a painting. It's absolutely amazing.
You should have 1-2 nights here, as there are many areas to explore. Next time, we'll take you to Nikko, a beautiful natural area with a cool breeze, even though it's not the fall foliage season. It's definitely worth a visit.
📍Location: World Heritage Site, Nikko City, Tochigi Prefecture, Japan
💰Price: Admission to the World Heritage Site, including all three shrines, is 1,600 yen, and parking is 500 yen.
