Ginzan Onsen, located in Obanazawa City, Yamagata Prefecture, Japan, is one of Japan's most iconic retro hot spring resorts. Renowned for its romantic Taisho era charm, this hot spring town boasts quaint wooden inns lined along the Ginzan River. At night, illuminated by warm yellow lights, the streets seem to step into a time warp, reminiscent of a fairytale. In winter, heavy snow blankets the roofs and streets, creating a dreamy scene with the steaming hot springs. It's a winter secret destination that many travelers cherish as a "once-in-a-lifetime destination."
Ginzan Onsen's history dates back to the Edo period. Initially spurred by silver mining, it later gained a reputation for healing thanks to its bubbling hot springs. The town boasts over a dozen traditional hot spring inns, the most iconic of which is Notoya Ryokan, the inspiration for the film "Spirited Away." Guests can soak in the open-air baths while gazing at the snowy scenery, experiencing the ultimate tranquility and warmth.
Beyond soaking in the hot springs, visitors can also enjoy local specialties such as soba noodles, Yamagata beef, and hot spring manju. Strolling through the streets dotted with snow lanterns at night, with only the sounds of gurgling water and the crunch of snow underfoot, one can deeply feel the unique romance and tranquility of Japan's winter.
