Ginzan Onsen's Scenic Beauty

Ginzan Onsen, located in Obanazawa City, Yamagata Prefecture, Japan, is a nostalgic hot spring town often hailed as one of Japan's most beautiful onsen streets. Its name, meaning 'Silver Mountain,' originates from the discovery of a silver mine in the early 17th century. As silver mining declined, the area transitioned into a hot spring retreat, developing a unique cluster of wooden ryokan inns during the Taisho and Showa eras, creating the distinctive scenery seen today.

The most captivating feature of Ginzan Onsen is the three- to four-story wooden ryokan inns lining both sides of the Ginzan River. Many of these inns retain the romantic Taisho-era architectural style. When gas lamps illuminate the street at night, the entire area exudes a nostalgic and dreamy atmosphere, as if stepping back in time. In winter, snow blankets the rooftops and bridges, creating a picturesque scene that attracts photographers and travelers alike. The town features around ten onsen inns, some offering day-use bathing services, as well as public baths like 'Shirogane no Yu' and 'Kyojo Bathhouse,' making it easy for visitors to enjoy the hot spring experience. During spring and summer, travelers can explore walking trails leading to the Shirogane Waterfall and the old silver mine ruins, experiencing the charm of nature intertwined with history.
