Odawara Castle🏯 in Odawara City, Kanagawa Prefecture, was the home base of the Hojo clan, built at a key transportation point along the Tokaido road, and is known as an impregnable and invincible castle.
It resisted Toyotomi Hideyoshi's unification of Japan to the end, and was surrounded by a 200,000-strong army led by Hideyoshi, surrendering after about three months of siege, but the castle was never taken by force.
During the Edo period, the castle was damaged by two major earthquakes, causing the tower and turrets to collapse, but the exterior was restored in 1960, and the castle is now maintained as Odawara Castle Ruins Park.
