Standing proudly between the mountains of Hakone and the Sagami Bay, Odawara Castle is a symbol of resilience and power. For centuries, it served as the impregnable fortress of the Later Hōjō clan, controlling the vital Tōkaidō road to Edo (Tokyo). For a solo traveler, it's an accessible and immersive dive into samurai history, with a modern museum and panoramic views that make the journey unforgettable.
My Solo Itinerary:
· Morning – Castle Keep & Samurai History: I started by exploring the main Tenshukaku (castle keep), a 1960s concrete reconstruction that houses a modern museum. The exhibits, featuring armor, weapons, and historical documents, vividly tell the story of the Hōjō clan and the castle's strategic importance. I climbed to the top floor for a stunning 360-degree view of Odawara City, Sagami Bay, and on a clear day, the iconic peak of Mt. Fuji.
· Afternoon – Park Strolls & Hidden Gates: I spent the midday hours wandering the serene Odawara Castle Park, exploring the original stone walls, moats, and the reconstructed Tokiwagi Gate. I found a quiet bench under the pine trees to people-watch and enjoy a moment of peace, imagining the armies of Toyotomi Hideyoshi that laid siege here in 1590.
· Evening – Local Bites & Onsen Relaxation: I headed to the Odawara Fish Market (Uomachi) near the station for a fresh and affordable seafood bowl (kaisendon). To end the day perfectly, I visited a local onsen (hot spring) to soak and reflect, just as travelers on the Tōkaidō would have done centuries ago.
Why Odawara Castle is Perfect for Solo Travelers:
· Easy & Efficient: Located just a 10-minute walk from Odawara Station (on the Shinkansen line!), it's one of the most accessible major castles from Tokyo.
· A Complete Historical Package: The combination of the reconstructed keep, the original ruins, and the excellent museum provides a full and satisfying historical picture.
· Fantastic Photo Ops: The views from the keep and the classic castle silhouette against the sky are superb.
· Gateway to Hakone: It makes for a perfect half-day trip before or after exploring the hot springs and lakes of Hakone.
Tips for Your Visit:
· 🗺️ Grab a map at the entrance to ensure you don't miss any of the park's historical spots.
· 🍊 Try a local specialty: Odawara is famous for its kamaboko (fish cakes) and mikan (mandarin oranges).
· 🌸 Visit in spring for the castle's beautiful cherry blossoms.
· 🎫 Check for combination tickets that include entry to the nearby Odawara City Museum.
Odawara Castle is more than a building; it's a strategic landmark that shaped Japanese history, and visiting it solo lets you connect with that legacy at your own pace.
