Unshoji Temple is an ancient temple located on the Oga Peninsula in Akita Prefecture, jutting out into the Sea of Japan.
It is a small temple in a small port town, but the deputy chief priest there has grown a carpet of blue hydrangeas from one plant to over 2,000 over the course of more than 20 years.
In 2017, it was chosen as the number one place in the "Breathtaking Views in the World You Want to See Before You Die" series, which drew attention, and since then, it has become one of Akita's top tourist spots.
The best time to see hydrangeas is usually from mid-June to early July.
This year, 2025, the flowers bloomed a little later, and the best time to see them seemed to continue until around mid-July.
It was truly an impressive scale to see them in person.
A blue carpet of hydrangeas.
Daytime viewing is available until 5:00 p.m., and from 6:45 p.m. you can enjoy the limited-time night illumination.
The carpet of blue was even more enjoyable and fantastic.
