Saidaiji Temple

#Furitabi

The naked festival is widely known as one of the strangest festivals in Japan, but its history dates back to the Nara period.

The Shussui-e, or New Year's Great Prayer, was founded by Jicchu, a disciple of Todaiji Sojo Roben, and was passed down by Anryu, the founder of the temple, and has been held solemnly for 14 days every year from the first day of the lunar new year.

The Eyo event begins with a start ceremony three weeks in advance.

First, the materials for the Shingi (sacred sticks) are collected, and the next day, the Shingi are carved into a pair of Shingi. 14 days before the event, the main deity, the Thousand-Armed Kannon, is decorated and the Shussui-e begins. It is solemnly held by the head priest and over 10 other monks, who continue to pray every day for peace in the nation, bountiful harvests, and prosperity for all people.
