On a day trip from Kyoto, we ventured out to Ōmihachiman in Shiga Prefecture, a charming town filled with Edo-period architecture and peaceful waterways. The highlight of the visit was a relaxing Hachiman-bori canal cruise, where you can admire the town’s nostalgic scenery from a small wooden boat as it glides quietly through the calm water.
The canal and surrounding streets have been featured in famous films such as “Rurouni Kenshin” and “Onihei Hankachō.” The ride lasts about 35 minutes — just enough time to soak in the views of traditional warehouses, stone walls, and willow trees swaying gently in the breeze.
Tickets are ¥1,500 for adults and ¥1,000 for children — a small price for such a peaceful and cinematic experience. A wonderful way to see the historical heart of Ōmihachiman from a new perspective.
