Kuromon Ichiba Market, Kuromon Ichiba Market #OSAKA

Kuromon Ichiba Market (黒門市場) is an old fresh market in Osaka, which has been open since the Meiji period, or over 100 years ago. This market is known as the ‘Kitchen of Osaka’, with over 170 shops lining both sides of a 580-meter walkway, including fresh food, ready-to-eat food, vegetables, fruits, and various other goods.

The original name of Kuromon Ichiba Market (圓明寺市場) was Enmyoji Market, named after the nearby temple. The temple had a black gate, so it was commonly called ‘Kuromon (黒門)’, which means ‘black gate’. The temple was destroyed by fire in 1912, leaving only the market. Today, the market has become a major tourist attraction with many visitors throughout the day.
