The Nansi Tang Dynasty Pagoda, originally named the Huiche Temple Relic Pagoda, was built in the first year of Emperor Taizong's Zhenguan reign (627 AD). With a history of 1,300 years, it predates the Big Wild Goose Pagoda at Ci'en Temple in Xi'an, built in the third year of Emperor Gaozong's Yongwei reign, and a full eighty years earlier than the Small Wild Goose Pagoda at Anjianfu Temple in Xi'an, built in the first year of Emperor Zhongzong's Jinglong reign. It is one of the earliest Tang Dynasty pagodas in Shaanxi Province. It is located in the southwest corner of the city at Huiche Temple (now Pucheng Middle School).
It is a square, dense-eaves hollow brick tower, a typical example of the perfect evolution from a pavilion-style wooden tower to a brick and stone structure. The eaves, beams, square columns, brackets, walls, doors and windows of each floor are made entirely of bricks in the form of a wooden structure. The eaves of the tower are closely connected and overlapped layer by layer. The distance between each floor is very short, and the eaves are almost invisible. The first, second and third levels have as many as 15 layers of eaves, hence the name of the "dense-eaves" brick tower.
From the second to the sixth level of the tower, each level has two arched doors that open in different directions. The seams of the tower are glued with glutinous rice juice, which is strong, firm and beautiful. There are lattice windows and carved animals between each level of the tower, which are exquisite, unique and magnificent.
