Encounter the Deep Sea Romance of Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan

Taking the subway from downtown Osaka, it takes less than half an hour to reach Osaka Port. As soon as I got off the subway, I could feel the salty sea breeze, and my mood inexplicably lightened. Walking to the waterfront, the huge building that looks like a cruise ship is the Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan, the highlight of my trip. Its appearance looks like it could set sail at any moment, giving off a very cinematic vibe.

Once inside, it feels like falling into an underwater world, surrounded by glowing blue aquariums with fish swimming around as if dancing right before your eyes. What impressed me the most was the giant "Pacific Ocean" tank that runs through the entire facility, standing nine meters tall and reportedly holding 5,400 tons of seawater. A massive whale shark slowly swam past me; it was truly graceful, and that slow-motion feeling brought an overwhelming sense of tranquility. The manta rays were super cute, suddenly flipping over to show their bellies as if greeting you; schools of sardines swirled in groups, shimmering silver, making my eyes dazzle.

Besides the main Pacific tank, there are fifteen other themed exhibition areas, all designed with great detail. There’s a "Japanese Forest" zone where playful little otters splash around, adorably clumsy; the "Antarctic Continent" features a whole group of penguins waddling like kids in suits; and the "Coral Reef" area is filled with brightly colored tropical fish, like stepping into an animated film.

The aquarium is more than just a photo spot; you can learn a lot of fascinating ocean facts. I tried touching starfish and sea urchins, and their textures were completely different—so amazing. Plus, some interactive exhibits are engaging even for adults, so there’s no need to worry about boredom.

I visited on a weekday afternoon, and it wasn’t crowded, so I could take my time to look around and take photos. Tickets cost about HKD 140, which honestly is a great value considering the scale and impact of the experience.

For me, the Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan is not just a tourist attraction but a gentle deep-sea adventure. Next time you come to Osaka, why not stop by and give yourself a chance to meet the sea?
