In the 17th century, a Spanish ship was shipwrecked in the Kuroshio Current, and at that time, Japanese female divers from Chiba bravely rescued the crew. The Spain Pavilion uses this story to open the narrative of the Osaka Expo, bringing it closer to Japan.
The Spain National Pavilion, designed collaboratively by Enorme Studio and two other architecture and design firms, uses the ocean and the sun to highlight similarities with Japan.
The interior exhibition starts from the Mediterranean and unfolds through ocean currents, using technologies like video projection and holographic projection to showcase ecology, environmental protection, wind power initiatives, and marine biodiversity.
After exploring the ocean, visitors enter a bright orange space representing passion and sunshine. Here, a postcard wall made up of Spanish postcards is paired with screens introducing Spain’s scenery, evoking the warm and hospitable spirit of Spain, welcoming travelers from around the world with open arms. The most crowded area is the Spanish wine sales section, and the Spanish restaurant at the exit often has long lines. It is recommended to visit after dark: the sunrise-themed stairway is stunning, and there is almost no wait to enter at night. During the day, performances take place in the plaza, which passersby can enjoy and take photos with the performers.
