[Osaka] Tsuyunotenjinja Shrine Part 2

Although widely known as "Ohatsu Tenjin," its official name is Tsuyu-no-Tenjinsha.

Many people praying for love and drawing love fortunes visited the shrine, bustling with activity.

In 1703 (Genroku 16), Ohatsu, a prostitute from Tenmaya in Dojima-Shinchi, and Tokubei, a clerk at Hiranoya in Uchihonmachi, committed suicide in Tenjin no Mori (the forest behind the current shrine).

One month later, Chikamatsu Monzaemon presented the story of their tragic love as a puppet play, "Sonezaki Shinju," which became a sensation at the time.
The shrine where the incident took place became instantly famous, and has since been commonly referred to as "Ohatsu Tenjin," after the name of its heroine, Ohatsu.
"Ohatsu" was the name she was called at Tenmaya, and her posthumous Buddhist name at Kujoji Temple (Nakadera, Chuo Ward, Osaka City), inscribed on her grave (memorial monument), is "Myo-riki Shinjo," suggesting her name may have been "Otome."
