For this trip to Hokkaido, I specially arranged to start from Sapporo, go all the way to Otaru along the Zenihan Beach, and then climb Tengu Mountain, in order to fully experience the charm of the northern country in winter. Along the way, the coastline outside the car window was covered with light snow. The deep blue tones of the sea and sky made people stare out the window in a daze, as if they were also swimming along with the waves.
-The tranquility and vastness of Qianhan Beach
Zenibako is a coastal town between Sapporo and Otaru. As soon as you get off the car, you can feel the slightly salty sea breeze in the air. There are fewer tourists at the seaside in winter. Walking on the beach covered with fine snow, I feel a rare sense of peace in my heart. In the distance, you can see several fishing boats slowly passing by, with waves hitting the shore, bringing the unique cool atmosphere of Hokkaido in winter.
-Otaru's nostalgic romance
Going further to Otaru, although the city is more lively than Zenhan, it still retains a nostalgic atmosphere. The snow-covered cobblestone streets contrast with the old warehouse buildings beside the Otaru Canal, making it feel like you have walked into a postcard. There are also many dessert and souvenir shops here, and every alley hides a surprise. However, what I am most looking forward to is the seafood donburi! There are many small shops near Otaru Port. Each bowl is filled with fresh salmon, tuna, scallops, crab meat, and plump salmon roe. The sweet taste is fresh when you take a bite, and paired with hot miso soup, it warms up the whole person.
- Beautiful night view and skiing fun at Mt. Tengu
After eating, take the cable car up to Tengu Mountain. Tengu Mountain not only has a ski resort, but is also a great place to enjoy the night view. As the cable car climbs upward, the entire city of Otaru and the coastline slowly come into view. During the day, it is a large expanse of silver-white snow, and at night, the lights and the blue sea are intertwined, like sparkling gems. There is also a small Tengu Shrine on the top of the mountain where you can see Tengu masks or experience the local Japanese culture.
If you have time, you can also ski or play snow activities here. Although the ski slope is not too long, the snow quality is great and even beginners can enjoy skiing here. The first time I skied, I fell and got covered in snow, but I found it fun and exciting. After all, being able to fall in such a beautiful scenery is a rare memory!
There is something magical about the winter in Hokkaido. From the tranquility of the Zenihako Beach, to the romantic nostalgia of Otaru, to the magnificent night view and skiing experience of Tengu Mountain, the whole trip was full of surprises and touches. Especially the seafood bowl I tasted in Otaru, I still miss its delicious taste that melts in your mouth. If you also want to experience the pure white fairy tale of Hokkaido, don’t miss this route: enjoy the cool breeze by the sea, overlook the lights from the mountain, play in the snow, and end the trip with a full seafood bowl!
