If you're in Sapporo during winter, don’t miss the chance to take a magical day trip to Otaru, a charming port town full of delicious eats and romantic streets!
My trip started with a visit to Sapporo’s 三角市场 (Sankaku Market) — just steps from JR Sapporo Station. There, I enjoyed an unforgettable breakfast at 龙波食堂 (Donburi Chaya). The seafood donburi was unbelievably fresh, loaded with Hokkaido uni, ikura, scallops, and sweet shrimp — absolutely a must-eat!
After the feast, I hopped on a quick 1-hour train ride to Otaru. The view from the train in winter is stunning — snow-covered towns and sparkling sea views. Once in Otaru, I headed straight to the famous Otaru Canal, lined with vintage warehouses and soft-glowing gas lamps. The snowy scenery was picture-perfect and felt like a fairytale!
Wandering along Sakaimachi Street, I was greeted with cozy cafés, music box shops, glassware stores, and endless food stalls. One of the best parts? The desserts! You must try LeTAO’s signature double fromage cheesecake — creamy, fluffy, and melt-in-your-mouth delicious. I also tried their chocolate version and couldn’t resist buying a few boxes to take home!
Travel Tips:
Start early to enjoy breakfast at 三角市场 before heading to Otaru.
Take the JR Rapid Airport line — it’s fast and scenic.
Wear warm layers and snow boots — the streets are icy!
Bring a camera or phone with plenty of storage — every corner is photo-worthy.
Otaru in winter is a perfect blend of history, food, and romance — ideal for couples, friends, or even solo explorers!
