Shiga Prefectural Lake Biwa Museum

It is a comprehensive museum with the theme of Lake Biwa, the largest freshwater lake in Japan, displaying the nature, history and culture of Lake Biwa. You can spend a fulfilling day at the Shiga Prefectural Lake Biwa Museum. First, you will visit the aquarium exhibition room and see various creatures of Lake Biwa, including carp, sturgeon, eel, etc.

Afterwards, we also saw the Baikal seals introduced from Lake Baikal in Russia. They were very cute and would play in the water. Then we went to the interactive display, where we could touch and observe the specimens and fossils of organisms, listen to the sounds of organisms, feel the temperature and flow rate of the water, and finally go to the outdoor display area to appreciate the beautiful gardens and ponds, as well as a huge model of ancient Lake Biwa. This museum allowed us to learn a lot about Lake Biwa and gain an understanding of the relationship and importance between humans and lakes.
