Patan Museum at a Glance
Figure 1 is the treasure of the museum: the statue of Sakyamuni
A good Buddha statue not only embodies the Buddhist teachings, but also represents the realm of art. A good Buddha statue is like artistic Prajna, which brings people visual beauty and spiritual shock. When you look at it, you feel your heart being melted little by little, and you are inspired by this powerful mysterious force. It is a living soul of art.
The face of this Sakyamuni Buddha is almost perfect, with slightly drooping eyes that seem to have life, and a compassionate and dignified expression that looks lifelike. It possesses eighty kinds of excellence and fully demonstrates the majesty of the Buddha. It also makes people respect and love it at first sight.
Among the many handicrafts in Nepal, the art of Buddhist sculpture is undoubtedly one of the handicrafts with the longest inheritance, the highest level, the greatest achievements, and the most worthy of collection. The country of snow-capped mountains has a wide variety of statue-making techniques, among which the craftsmanship of gilded bronze Buddha statues is the most complete. Among them, the inheritance of the Sakya clan in the Kathmandu Valley is the longest, most rigorous and most excellent.
Today, the gilded Buddha statues of the Sakya clan of Nepal can be said to represent the highest level of metal bronze Buddha statues in the world. They are not only regarded as a state gift by the Nepalese government (the bronze statue of Maitreya Bodhisattva in Xuedou Temple in Zhejiang was donated by Nepal), but major Buddhist temples also consider it an honor and merit to be able to invite statues of local masters.
