This is just a little park in the middle of the city, Righ text to Sule Pagoda. However, it is important because it is home to the Independence Monument, which commemorates end of British involvement if Burma. We were there this Independence Day - it was the 72nd - and in the evening the little park was alive with families and friends enjoying the celebration and the evening. The park was all lit up, festooned with sparkly coloured lights in all the topiaried plants and trees, sellers of bric n brac and food hawkers. The old colonial buildings around the perimeter of the Square were all coloured washed with light and there was a true carnival atmosphere. Things are much less exciting during the day, when the space morphs back into it's workaday clothes of small shrubs, topiaried plants, a pond and a childrens playgound. It does provide an all important quietish place to sit in the hustle and bustle of Rangoon.
