Hidden within the tranquil grounds of Wat Yai Suwannaram lies one of Thailand’s most remarkable wooden sanctuaries — The Teaching Hall, known to locals as Sala Kan Parian or The Tiger King’s Palace. This exquisite structure carries a story where royal reverence and spiritual devotion intertwine, tracing back to the golden age of Ayutthaya.
Originally built within the Ayutthaya Grand Palace during the reign of King Sanphet VIII (The Tiger King), the teakwood hall once echoed with royal teachings and sacred discourse. In a profound act of gratitude, the King later dedicated the hall to Somdej Phra Suwanna Muni (Somdej Chao Tangmo) — the Supreme Patriarch of Ayutthaya and a native of Phetchaburi, who had guided him with wisdom and compassion.
To honor his mentor’s origins, the entire palace was carefully dismantled and transported from Ayutthaya to Phetchaburi, where it was reassembled within Wat Yai Suwannaram — the very monastery where the patriarch once studied as a young monk.
Today, the Teaching Hall stands as a masterpiece of Thai craftsmanship, adorned with finely carved teak panels and timeworn murals that glow in the soft light filtering through its ancient wood. Every beam and carving seems to whisper the legacy of faith, humility, and gratitude that binds teacher and king across the centuries.
