Wat Yai Suwannaram Worawihan: A Treasure Trove of Late Ayutthaya Art in Phetchaburi
Wat Yai Suwannaram Worawihan is one of the most historically and artistically significant temples in Phetchaburi Province. This ancient royal temple, believed to date back to the late Ayutthaya period, is a center for the city's master craftsmen and a must-see destination.
Must-See Highlights
Ubosot (Ubosot Maha Udom):
Murals: This is the most important highlight! The murals inside the ubosot are late Ayutthaya art and remain beautiful, although some have faded over time. The paintings depict scenes from the life of the Buddha, the assembly of deities, and, interestingly, include paintings incorporating different beliefs and artistic styles, such as a painting of a "Farang," which is debated as possibly a portrait of an important figure from that era.
Phra Principal Buddha: Inside is enshrined the principal Buddha image in the Mara-Vijaya posture. Behind it is the 11-inch Luang Pho, a sacred Buddha image brought from an abandoned temple.
Luang Pho Hok Niw: This Buddha image is associated with beliefs and legends regarding its six-fingered feet (located in the ubosot or vihara).
