Wat Mahathat

Wat Mahathat in Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Province is one of the temples within the Ayutthaya Historical Park.
Wat Mahathat was a crucial temple during the Ayutthaya period, housing the relics of the Great Relic at the heart of the city.
It was also the residence of the Supreme Patriarch of the Khamwasi sect.
The temple was constantly under construction and maintained until it was destroyed and abandoned after the Second Fall of Ayutthaya.

A world-class Unseen Thailand landmark of Wat Mahathat, the first place visitors must search for and photograph is the Buddha head encased in the roots of a Bodhi tree. This sandstone Buddha head is believed to have fallen from the base of the Bodhi tree next to the surrounding viharn (wihan) around 50 years ago during a previous restoration. The Buddha image itself disappeared. Over time, the roots gradually grew out and tightly encased the head, giving it the appearance of emerging from the tree. It's truly astonishing.

We arrived at 4 p.m., when the weather was pleasant, and we were able to stroll around the temple at ease. The temple is vast, and despite the loss of its former beauty, the structure remains intact. Sometimes I can't help but think about how beautiful it was back then. Anyone who's never been there must go at least once. Especially now that Orn Jao is here, I feel especially immersed in it.
