Wat Mahathat is located in the city of Ayutthaya. It has a distinctive feature: a Buddha head that is over a hundred years old in the roots of a tree. The Buddha head is made of sandstone, with only the head remaining. The body of the Buddha is missing. It is an Ayutthaya style Buddha head, placed in the roots of a Bodhi tree next to the temple. It is believed that the Buddha head fell to the base of a tree during the fall of Ayutthaya until the roots covered it, making it strangely beautiful and a wonder. This has made this temple famous and known to both Thais and foreigners.
