[Ayutthaya, Thailand] Wat Mahathat: A mysterious attraction in the historic city!

Can you imagine a Buddha statue at the roots of an old tree? Therefore, the mysterious attraction of Wat Mahathat is the most photographed attraction in the historic city of Ayutthaya.

Wat Mahathat (วัดมหาธาตุ), "the temple of the great ruins", is one of the most important temples of the Ayutthaya Kingdom. Located on historic grounds, it has a huge central platform, a very large main hall and many outbuildings as well as a very large and stunning courtyard. It was a royal temple located close to the royal palace. It is believed that this temple was built in the 14th century and important royal ceremonies were performed here.

In the middle of the lush lawns is a crumbling complex, some of which look like they will collapse at any time... It features traditional Khmer architecture, Angkor Wat style, headless Buddha statues, pagodas, and the famous Buddha head entangled by tree roots. For many people this is undoubtedly the entry point to the Ayutthaya ruins, there are many tour groups from the beginning, but for many of them the visit seems to be limited to the "tree hugging the Buddha head", so get there early to take pictures of the Buddha head, they made a wooden platform for people to take close-up photos (selfies are almost what everyone does there), so it is one of the most photographed spots in the temple. As soon as you pass this attraction, the crowds seem to disappear!

Its tranquility makes it an ideal place for meditation or a stroll. Sitting in the proper position and imagining what Ayutthaya looked like before it was destroyed in the 18th century, placing yourself in the ancient times around 900 years ago can make the mind and body more pleasant.
