Wat Mae Nang Plim 🛕
:
A temple over 647 years old that has not been destroyed. If anyone has watched The Legend of King Naresuan the Great, you might be able to recall this temple. “Wat Mae Nang Plim” is an ancient temple built in the Ayutthaya period. It is assumed that it was built in 1920. The area where the temple is located used to be a Burmese camp.
:
Wat Mae Nang Plim has a history dating back to the time of King Naresuan the Great. Mae Plim was a villager living by the riverside on the outskirts of the capital city alone. She had no children or grandchildren. One day, King Naresuan rowed a boat alone in the rain. When he arrived, he saw that the hut still had a lantern. It was late at night. King Naresuan stopped by the hut. Mae Nang Plim saw a man with wet clothes coming up. She kindly invited him, but he spoke loudly, as is typical of a brave warrior. Mae Plim warned him, “My son, don’t be so loud. It’s already late. The king will hear and be angry. He spoke even louder, I want to drink sandalwood water. I am wet and cold. I want sandalwood water to warm my body. Suddenly, Mae Pleum was even more shocked because today is a Buddhist holy day. Mae Pleum said that if you really want to drink it, you must promise not to let the news spread or the King will know. It will be dangerous. Phra Naresuan promised. Mae Pleum gave her sandalwood water to drink (eat). Somdet Phra Naresuan stayed overnight at Mae Pleum's house. In the morning, he returned to the palace.
:
Later, a procession was organized to take Mae Pleum to be raised in the palace. Because Mae Pleum was a kind person who was loyal to the King, after Mae Pleum passed away, Somdet Phra Naresuan held a funeral to honor her. Then Somdet Phra Naresuan built a temple for Mae Pleum called "Wat Mae Nang Pleum". The principal Buddha image here is Luang Pho Khao, which is very beautiful.
:
Inside the chapel is enshrined Phra Phutthanimit Mongkhon Sri Rattana Trai or what the villagers call "Luang Pho Khao". Luang Pho Khao is a Buddha image in the Mara-Vijaya attitude. His face is smiling and he looks very beautiful. The Buddha image is completely white. Only his hair is black. It is believed that Luang Pho Khao was built in 1920 at the same time as Wat Mae Nang Pluem. This temple has a door in the middle where when you look straight through the door, you can clearly see Luang Pho Khao enshrined.
