It was a royal temple within the ancient Ayutthaya palace. It was originally built as a private temple for the King. Located within the royal palace grounds, it was not occupied by monks. It served as a place for the King to perform religious duties and perform important royal ceremonies, such as the Royal Water Ceremony.
The temple complex boasts three large, Sri Lankan-style bell-shaped chedis, alternating with three pavilions. At the western end of the final chedi is the base of a four-sided viharn (ordination hall). This viharn was built to enshrine the royal ashes of the Ayutthaya period kings.
Wat Phra Si Sanphet, located within the Ayutthaya Historical Park, was designated a World Heritage Site on December 13, 1991. Visitors to Ayutthaya should stop by to admire the beauty of this ancient temple and pray for good fortune. Admission is 10 baht for Thais, 50 baht for foreigners, and free for children and students.
