Whispers of Faith: The Royal Sermon Hall of Ayutthaya

Once standing proudly to the east of the Main Pagoda (Prang), the Royal Sermon Hall—or Royal Vihara—was a sacred space where kings and monks once gathered in devotion. Built of solid brick and mortar, its graceful design reflected the architectural harmony of the Ayutthaya period, aligned perfectly with the Pagoda’s axis and mirroring the Ordination Hall (Ubosot) to the west.

Today, only fragments of its former grandeur remain—the platform and a single southern wall, silent witnesses to centuries past. Along that wall, the distinct square balustrade pattern—rectangular holes framed with flower-shaped motifs—still whispers of the craftsmanship of the Early to Middle Ayutthaya Period.

Though the structure now lies in ruins, it continues to radiate a quiet reverence. Standing before it, one can almost imagine the echoes of royal sermons carried through time, where faith once shaped the rhythm of a glorious kingdom.
