Wat Mahathat, Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Province, is one of the temples in the Ayutthaya Historical Park. Wat Mahathat was a very important temple during the Ayutthaya period because it enshrined the Phra Borommathat in the heart of the city and was also the residence of the Supreme Patriarch of the Khamwasi sect. Therefore, this temple was built and maintained all the time until it was destroyed and abandoned after the fall of Ayutthaya for the second time.
