Wat Chaitharam (Wat Chalong), Phuket
It is said that if you come to Phuket, you should come to pay homage to Luang Por Chaem at Wat Chalong or Wat Chaitharam, a temple that is a symbol of Phuket. The story of his sacredness, his reputation for curing diseases, his great merit and compassion has made many people believe in him. It is said that while he was alive, there were people who waited to apply gold leaf to his arms and legs until they looked bright yellow like applying gold leaf to a Buddha statue. Even though Luang Por Chaem passed away hundreds of years ago, his fame, reputation and charisma have been remembered by people forever. Today, Luang Por Chaem is still a source of spiritual support for Phuket residents, Thais from all regions, and even neighboring visitors to the pearl of the Andaman Sea.
One part of Luang Por Chaem's history tells of the year 1876, which was during the reign of King Rama V. Luang Por Chaem helped Phuket residents fight against the Ang Yi gang, mining workers who had rioted, killed, and attacked the villagers and tried to occupy Phuket. At that time, Luang Por gave all the villagers a white cloth to wrap around their heads as a protective amulet, which greatly built confidence and morale among the Phuket residents. They used Wat Chalong as a stronghold like a fortress used in the fight until they were able to defeat the Ang Yi gang. When King Rama V found out, he graciously bestowed the title of Phra Khru Wisutthiwongsachan Yanamuni on Luang Por Chaem, giving him the position of Sangkhapamok of Phuket, which was the highest position at that time. He also granted the name of Wat Chalong to Wat Chaithararam from then on.
