Pingtung Eluanbi Lighthouse is located at Eluanbi Cape in Kenting National Park, Hengchun Town, Pingtung County, Taiwan. It is the southernmost lighthouse on the main island of Taiwan. The lighthouse was built by the Qing government in 1881 (the 7th year of the reign of Emperor Guangxu of the Qing Dynasty). It was originally designed by a British engineer and completed in 1883. It was designed to solve the needs of frequent shipwrecks on the Qixingyan reef at that time (such as the Luofa incident in 1867). The lighthouse was damaged by war in 1895, rebuilt by the Japanese colonial government in 1898, and modernized by the Chinese government in 1962. It was replaced with the most powerful rotating lens electric lamp in the country, making its light range reach 20 nautical miles, and it enjoys the title of "Light of East Asia". On March 15, 2024, the lighthouse was announced by the Ministry of Culture as a national monument, becoming an important historical and tourist attraction in Taiwan.
The lighthouse is a white iron round tower, 21.4 meters high, with a cannon-fort design. The walls are equipped with shooting holes and trenches. It is the only armed lighthouse in the country. The interior of the tower is divided into five floors and is now open to visitors. The lighthouse provides an observation deck, overlooking the magnificent sea view at the junction of the Bashi Channel and the Pacific Ocean. The park has Eluanbi Park, which covers an area of about 59 hectares and includes coral reef terrain, tropical coastal plants and many trails, such as the seaside boardwalk and Canghai Pavilion, which are suitable for hiking. The weather is cool in winter, so it is recommended to wear a thick coat. There are rest areas and simple shops in the park. Visitors need to pay attention to trail safety and carry water.
In terms of transportation, Eluanbi Lighthouse can be reached by public transportation.
