The hiking guide for Wugong Mountain that everyone’s been asking about—an amazing route even beginners can tackle, with sea of clouds and meadows all in one view

Everyone, I went to Wugong Mountain last year and posted a bunch of photos of the sea of clouds and meadows on my social feed, and I got bombarded with questions! “Where is this?” “Is it hard to hike?” “Can beginners do it?” Today, I’m sharing my personal Wugong Mountain hiking guide with you—routes, gear, and pitfalls to avoid, all packed with useful info. Follow this, and you too can be a “sea of clouds observer” at the summit!

🔍 Why is Wugong Mountain the top choice in the hiking community?

- Scenery so stunning it’s almost unfair: Tens of thousands of acres of meadows spread like a green carpet on the summit. When the sea of clouds rolls in, it feels like stepping into a fairyland, especially at sunrise and sunset—your camera’s memory will be full in no time!

- Friendly routes: There are easy routes for beginners and challenging ones for seasoned hikers. You can finish it in a weekend, so even busy workers can find time to go.

- Few crowds and great photo ops: I took the Longshan Village route, avoiding the crowded main entrance area. Along the way, it’s mostly experienced hikers, so no waiting in line for photos—you can shoot however you want.

📅 Classic 2-day 1-night route: Longshan Village → Fayuankai → Golden Summit (beginner-friendly version)

🔹 Day 1: Longshan Village to Fayuankai (light hiking, 5 hours, relaxed sightseeing all the way)

- Transportation: Take a taxi from Pingxiang Station to Longshan Village (about 1 hour, 60-80 RMB). Just tell the driver “Longshan Village hiking start point,” locals will know.

- Route: Longshan Village → Windmill Pass → Fayuankai, about 12 km total. The climb isn’t steep. You’ll pass through bamboo forests and cross small streams. The meadows gradually open up in the second half, super healing!

- Accommodation: You must stay at “Sea of Clouds Inn” in Fayuankai! The owner is a local uncle, and his dried bamboo shoots stir-fried with pork and free-range chicken stewed with mushrooms are delicious. Rooms are clean, about 150 RMB per person including breakfast and dinner—great value.

🔹 Day 2: Fayuankai to Golden Summit and descend (watch the sea of clouds sunrise, totally worth the effort)

- Sunrise rush: Get up at 5 AM (don’t sleep in!), hike from Fayuankai to Golden Summit, about 1.5 hours to the viewing platform. When the sun pops out over the rolling sea of clouds, all your tiredness is gone!

- Golden Summit check-in: Take photos at the “Wugong Mountain Highest Peak” stone tablet and the glass skywalk (not for those afraid of heights, but the view is amazing). Plenty of material for your social feed.

- Descend: Take the “Level 2 cable car + scenic bus” from Golden Summit (cable car 65 RMB, bus 20 RMB). Easy and time-saving. If you don’t want to hike back, this is the way to go!

🎒 Gear list: What you need to be a “hiking pro”

- Must-have three-piece set:

- Trekking poles (buy at the base, 2 for 10 RMB, saves half your energy going up);

- Hiking shoes (don’t wear canvas shoes! The mountain paths are slippery. My friend wore Converse and almost ended up rolling down like a “rolling gourd”);

- Windbreaker (big temperature difference at the summit, wear short sleeves in the morning and take off your jacket at noon. The windbreaker is windproof and lightweight).

- Bonus items:

- Headlamp (essential for early sunrise, phone flashlight isn’t bright enough);

- Sunglasses + sun hat (meadows have no shade, UV rays can darken your skin by three shades);

- Thermos (a sip of hot water on the mountain instantly boosts happiness).

⚠️ Pitfall guide: I’ve stepped on these “mines” for you!

- Don’t stay in expensive tents at Golden Summit! The inn at Fayuankai is cheaper and more comfortable. The tents at Golden Summit are cramped like “sardine cans” and have no hot water for showers.

- Don’t bring too many snacks! Prices on the mountain are high (bottled water 10 RMB, instant noodles 25 RMB). The inn includes meals, just bring some energy bars or beef jerky.

- Don’t be fooled by “light hiking”! Unless you take cable cars all the way, your backpack with water, jacket, and snacks will weigh 5 to 10 pounds. Choosing a comfortable backpack is very important.

🍜 Food and lodging: Eat well and rest comfortably even while hiking

- What to eat on the mountain: The dried bamboo shoots at “Sea of Clouds Inn” in Fayuankai are freshly dug, the free-range chicken is tender, and the soup is so good you’ll lick the bowl. At Golden Summit, “Starry Sky Inn” offers self-heating rice meals for emergencies.

- Must-eats at the base: Near Pingxiang Station, “Old Ping Lane Lotus Blood Duck” serves spicy stir-fried duck blood and meat that’s super satisfying; “Yang Huzi Rice Noodles” has a rich broth, perfect for breakfast.

🚶‍♀️ Final reminders before the trip

- Check the weather! The “Wugong Mountain Weather” public account updates daily. Go on sunny days, avoid rainy days (mountain paths get slippery and dangerous).

- Save your energy! Don’t rush at the start. Walk at a steady pace and rest often, or your legs will be “done” the next day.

- Safety first! Stay with your group, don’t wander off for photos. Signal is weak on the mountain, download offline maps in advance.

Everyone, Wugong Mountain is truly a hiking paradise you’ll want to visit again and again! Save this guide, grab your friends for a weekend trip, and you’ll be the “hiking expert” in your social circle! Don’t forget to like and bookmark, or you might lose it while scrolling~
