Pingyao Ancient City is located in the central part of Shanxi Province in northern China. The ancient city has a total area of 2.25 square kilometers and is the most intact ancient city in the Han Chinese region. As of March 2023, the permanent population of Pingyao Ancient City was 10,845. In December 1997, it was listed as a cultural heritage site on the World Heritage List and is a national 5A tourist attraction.
Pingyao Ancient City was built during the reign of King Xuan of the Western Zhou Dynasty (827 BC-782 BC) and expanded in the third year of the Hongwu era of the Ming Dynasty (1370 AD), with a history of more than 2,700 years. There are more than 100 streets and alleys in Pingyao Ancient City, 3,797 traditional houses, six major temple complexes, and ancient buildings from various dynasties such as the county government office and the city building. There are attractions such as the ancient city wall, Zhenguo Temple, Shuanglin Temple, Pingyao County Government Office, Pingyao Inspection Institute, and Confucius Temple.
Pingyao Ancient City is a city built according to the traditional planning ideas and architectural styles of the Han Chinese. It embodies the historical and cultural characteristics of the Han Chinese from the 14th to the 19th centuries. It has important reference value for studying the social form, economic structure, military defense, religious beliefs, traditional ideas, and ethical morals of human habitation during this period.
