Pingyao Ancient City. As I walk down the cobblestone alleys, the faint smell of roasted bread floats on the breeze. At the end of the street, I see a strikingly imposing wooden gate. That's the China Biao Bureau Museum.
■What is Biao Bureau?
As I pass through the gate, the first thing that catches my eye are the two characters "Biao Bureau" carved into an aged wooden plaque.
"Biao Bureau" were private escort companies that existed from the Qing Dynasty through the Republic of China period—in other words, a kind of "bodyguard and transportation company."
They delivered gold, silver, treasures, and important documents to various locations, protecting them from the threat of thieves and bandits.
They truly embody the world of "martial arts."
■ Heroes of Pingyao
The exhibition room is filled with the costumes, weapons, contracts, and even maps of the escort routes of the time.
Each exhibit exudes a weight and spirit that comes with age.
According to our guide, Pingyao was once one of China's leading financial centers, with the Yinhao (ancient banks) and the Biao Bureau supporting the city's economy.
Those who lend money and those who protect it—it's true, the two are two sides of the same coin.
■ Faith Over the Sword
One of the most memorable exhibits was the hanging scroll "Biao Code," which lists the Biao Bureau's rules.
"Risk your life to protect the Biao (cargo)" and "Put faith first," among other words, which still resonate today.
The Biao Bureau's pride and joy lay not only in their military might, but also in their spirit of "righteousness and faith."
■Afternoon Thoughts in the Ancient City
Stepping out into the courtyard, bamboo sways in the breeze, and the sound of a gong echoes from somewhere.
I suddenly imagine myself as a horseman, galloping along the dusty roads.
More than a museum, it feels like standing at the entrance to a time travel adventure.
If you visit Pingyao Ancient City, the China Horseman Museum is a must-see spot. Deep within the quiet exhibition halls, you'll feel the breath of the "men of righteousness" of the past.
