Emerald Terraced Lakes, A Fairy's Forest 🧚♀️
Plitvice Lakes National Park is the highlight of any trip to Croatia and is recognized as a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site, often referred to as the 'Fairy's Forest.' Over thousands of years, erosion and sedimentation on the limestone terrain have created 16 terraced lakes connected by over 90 waterfalls of varying sizes, offering a breathtaking spectacle. The water's color constantly changes depending on the angle of sunlight, depth, and mineral content, displaying stunning hues like fluorescent emerald green and cobalt blue.
Walking along the wooden **boardwalks** over the lakes is a unique experience exclusive to Plitvice. The water is so clear that you can easily see the bottom, even in deep areas, and observe fish swimming gracefully. The park is divided into the **Upper Lakes** and **Lower Lakes**, and visitors can choose the **K Course (Full Course)** to explore the park leisurely all day or opt for the B or C courses to focus on the main highlights.
Tip: Plitvice is extremely popular, and during the **peak season (July-August)**, the crowds can be so overwhelming that it feels like walking in a 'train line.' Visiting during the shoulder seasons in late May, June, or September is highly recommended, and arriving early in the morning (right at opening time) is the best way to avoid the crowds. Inside the vast park, electric boats and panoramic trains are available to help conserve energy and move efficiently. Since there is a lot of walking involved, comfortable sneakers are an absolute must.
