Entering the heart of Porto, Portugal, you're greeted by a building that seems straight out of a historical picture album: São Bento Railway Station. It's not only Porto's transportation hub, but also a treasure trove of art and history.
🚉 Station Introduction
Built in 1916, this former 16th-century Benedictine monastery was abandoned due to fire and the Dissolution of the Church. King Carlos I subsequently ordered its conversion into a station. Designed by architect José Marques da Silva, it adopts the Beaux-Arts style, blending elements of ancient Greece, Rome, and the Renaissance.
The most famous feature is the azulejos in the station hall, which feature approximately 20,000 blue and white tiles depicting scenes from Portuguese history and folklore.
📸Highlights
The massive blue and white tile wall: Each tile is a microcosm of history, a sight that travelers will want to admire.
The station exterior: With its gray stone walls and classical arches, it resembles a European castle.
Nearby Attractions: A 10-minute walk to the Dom Luís I Bridge and Porto's Old Town.
