Built in 1907 during the Qing Dynasty's Guangxu era, this architectural masterpiece was designed by renowned German architect Lazarowicz. It covers an area of 55,000 square meters with a building area of 4,083 square meters, housing artifacts originally belonging to the German Governor's residence.
1. Historical Significance: Witnesses China's great revival from semi-feudal semi-colonial status to New China. Initially serving as the residence for the German Governor during their occupation, it later became the headquarters for the Japanese "Qingdao Garrison" during their first occupation, and the seat of the Japanese puppet government during their second occupation. After the founding of New China, it became an important venue for receiving Chinese and foreign leaders. Designated as a National Key Cultural Relic Protection Unit in 1996, this century-old landmark still stands tall, narrating the legendary awakening of the Eastern Dragon.
2. Architectural Value: A perfect fusion of Chinese and Western styles, it represents the most iconic German-style building in modern China, exemplary in its inclusive, harmonious, and commemorative architectural artistry. Even after over a century, it remains awe-inspiring. Liang Sicheng praised it as a monumental architectural work integrating multiple Eastern and Western cultural concepts.
