The Dafosi Grottoes are located at the foot of Qingliang Mountain, along the Xilan Highway, ten kilometers west of Bin County, Shaanxi Province. They lie on the main northern route of the Silk Road. Buddhism was introduced via the Silk Road during the Eastern Han Dynasty, gradually reaching its peak during the Southern and Northern Dynasties, and reaching its peak during the Sui and Tang Dynasties.

The temple, built on a mountainside, features 130 caves carved into the cliff face, scattered across a 40- meter-long east-west cliff face. It also boasts 446 niches housing over 1,980 statues , divided into four sections: the Great Buddha Cave, the Thousand Buddha Cave, the Arhat Cave, and the Zhangba Buddha Cave.

This important Buddhist cave temple was built near the Tang Dynasty capital of Chang'an during the heyday of Central Plains culture. Its Tang Dynasty clay Buddha statue is the largest in Chang'an and its surrounding area, exemplifying the spread of stone Buddha sculpture from the Western Regions to the east and its popularity in the Guanzhong region. It was hailed by Qing Dynasty scholar Bi Yuan as " the greatest wonder of Guanzhong ."
