🚲 The Island Vibe & Getting Around

Rottnest is a haven for relaxation and outdoor activity.

· Car-Free Policy: Private vehicles are not allowed, creating a peaceful and safe environment.
· Main Transport: The primary ways to get around are by bicycle, the Island Explorer Bus (a hop-on, hop-off service), or on foot.
· Cycling Paradise: The island is relatively flat, making cycling the perfect way to explore. You can bring your own bike or rent one on the island. A bike is the best way to discover hidden coves.

😊 The Quokka - The Island's Star

The island's most famous resident is the Quokka.

· What is it?: A small, cat-sized marsupial from the macropod family (related to kangaroos and wallabies). They are often called "the world's happiest animal" because of their friendly appearance and seemingly smiling faces.
· Where to find them: They are free-roaming and very common all over the island. You'll likely see them around the main settlement, near cafes, and in the bushland.
· Quokka Etiquette: It is illegal to touch or feed them. Always keep a respectful distance. For the famous "quokka selfie," just crouch down and be patient—they are curious and might hop close to you. Never offer them human food, as it can make them very sick.

🏖️ Beaches, Bays & Nature

The island is ringed by 63 stunning beaches and 20 beautiful bays.

· The Basin: A sheltered, crystal-clear swimming hole perfect for families, just a short walk or cycle from the main settlement.
· Pinky Beach & The Basin Area: Home to some of the most iconic and easily accessible beaches.
· West End: For a more rugged experience, head to the West End to see dramatic cliffs and, between September and November, spot migrating Humpback whales and other marine life.
· Wadjemup Lighthouse: Climb to the top for breathtaking 360-degree views of the entire island.
