Otaru, a small town in Hokkaido that is a must-go destination, clear blue skies and the sun blazing

Chill vibes on snow in Hokkaido? Absolutely. If you’re looking for the perfect winter city walk, Otaru is where it’s at. 🧊🌞 Blue skies, sunshine bouncing off snowy streets, and that iconic modern-meets-classic architecture all around Minatomachi make for serious visual inspiration!
Must-See Spot: Otaru Canal Walkpass
Location: 4-4 Minatomachi, Otaru, Hokkaido 047-0031
Open: All day, year-round
This canal walk is THE highlight — a dreamy stretch where historic warehouses meet icy water and open sky. Snap pics of the stone bridges (Instagram gold), then slow down and just soak up the tranquil snowy scene. Pro tip: Wear boots with grip — even on a sunny day, those paths are slippery!
My insider hack: Get there early for the clearest views and softer light on the snow. You’ll beat the crowds AND score killer photos if you head out around 8–9 AM. Plus, all that sunlight makes winter feel almost warm while you stroll.
Getting around? The canal area is walkable, but if you’re coming from Otaru Station, it’s just a 10-minute stroll — super easy. If you’re hungry, nearby cafes serve up Hokkaido’s famous cream puffs and fresh seafood rice bowls (try LeTAO for dessert).
Cash is king — bring yen, as smaller spots may not accept cards. Layers are a must, and keep an eye on changing weather (Otaru can go from sunny to snowstorm real quick).
