Sumiyoshi Taisha Shukuin Tongu Shrine, located in Sakai City, Osaka Prefecture, was originally established as the Ichinomiya Shrine of Settsu Province and Sumiyoshi's Otabisho (a resting place for mikoshi (portable shrines) during shrine festivals). (The date of its construction is unknown.)
Later, a branch shrine of Otori Taisha was also moved there, and since then, the deities of both shrines have been enshrined here.
Every year, on July 31st, a procession from Otori Taisha is held, and on August 1st, a procession from Sumiyoshi Taisha is held, along with the Arawa Oharai Shinto ritual at Iigaibori.
The shrine grounds are home to two shrines: Namiyoke Sumiyoshi Shrine and Otori Ise Shrine, which were relocated to the grounds during the Taisho period.
Before they were destroyed in the Sakai air raid, the two shrine buildings were side by side, but since then, they have been enshrined together in a single building.
The Kabuto Shrine Monument is located within the shrine grounds. This is where Empress Jingu buried her helmet to celebrate her victory upon returning to Sakai from her campaign against Korea. This is why the shrine became known as Kabuto Shrine.
The shrine was merged with Kaguchi Shrine in 1908.
The dry moat in the corner of the park next to the shrine is said to be the place where Hikohohodemi-no-Mikoto, from the Umisachi-Yamasachi myth, buried the "Shiomitsutama" (tide-filled jewel) and "Shiohirutama" (ebb tide jewel), gifts from the sea god. It remains dry year-round, even when it rains.
The moat's shape resembles a rice spoon, hence the name "Iikaibori" (rice spoon moat).
