Stonehenge-British World Heritage, a thousand-year-old mystery

#100 Ways to Travel

💞Reason for recommendation: Stonehenge can be traced back to the late Neolithic period and was built between 3000 and 2000 BC. It was built in several stages, probably initially as a ring of earthen embankments and trenches. The locals then began to erect huge stone pillars, forming the stone circle structure we see today. The purpose of Stonehenge remains a topic of debate among archaeologists and historians, but it may have been used as a religious ceremonial site or an astronomical observatory (the alignment of Stonehenge aligns with the direction of sunrise on the summer solstice and sunset on the winter solstice). Its most attractive features are the huge towering stone pillars, some of which are as high as 9 meters and weigh 25 tons.

🗓️Itinerary:

1. By train: From London Waterloo to Salisbury, about 90 minutes. Then take a bus or taxi to Stonehenge, which takes about 20-30 minutes.
2. By car: From London, drive along the M3 and A303 for about 2 hours.
3. Join a tour group: the most convenient for tourists. Half-day tours from London or other major cities are a popular option.
4. Bus: There is a direct bus from London Victoria Coach Station to the Stonehenge Visitor Center. From the Stonehenge Visitor Center you need to take a short shuttle bus to Stonehenge.
