Wat Phra That Sawi, also known locally as Wat Phra Borommathat Sawi, has long been a beloved temple in Sawi District and Chumphon Province. Its antiquity and fascinating history make it a must-see destination for tourists and Buddhists alike.
Sacred History and Legends
According to legend, the construction of Phra That Sawi is connected to King Sri Dharma Sokaraj, the ruler of the Srivijaya Kingdom. Upon his arrival with his army, he encountered a pile of bricks engulfed by a flock of crows croaking. Upon removing the bricks, he discovered the ancient chedi base and relics of the Lord Buddha. He ordered the chedi's renovation and renamed it "Phra That Kawi Pik" ("Wee Pik" in the Southern dialect means the flapping of crows' wings). This name was later corrupted to the current name "Sawi."
Architecture and Highlights
Phra That Sawi features Sri Lankan art, similar to the Phra Borommathat Chedi in Nakhon Si Thammarat. The square base is decorated with elephant statues with their heads protruding from the base, a work of art that reflects a time of past prosperity.
Besides the Phra That, the temple also houses another important sacred object: the Phra Suea Mueang Shrine. Legend has it that it was built to house the spirit of the city's ruler, a soldier who sacrificed his life to protect the Buddha's relics. This shrine is highly revered by local residents.
