May Day Square, located at the southern foot of Yushan Mountain in the heart of Fuzhou, covers an area of 4.5 hectares . Since its conversion into a gathering square in the 1970s, it has served as the heart of Fuzhou. The square has become the political and cultural center of Fuzhou and a key venue for leisure and cooling activities. The annual New Year's Day and National Day flag-raising ceremonies are held here.
To the north of the square is Yushan Hall, an important venue where the Municipal Party Committee and Municipal Government hold receptions and other foreign affairs; to the east are large landmark buildings such as the Provincial Science and Technology Museum, the Telecommunications Hub Building, and Yuanhong Garden; to the south is the Provincial Gymnasium with an indoor capacity of 6,000 people; and to the west is the Fuzhou People's Hall.
The square exudes a strong political and cultural atmosphere. A musical fountain stands in its center. A group of white sculptures, eight five- meter -tall dancing girls, compose the pool, symbolizing the joyful lives of the " daughters of Fujian " living in the land of Fujian. To the south of the fountain stands a large stainless steel sculpture depicting the Fuzhou city emblem, " Three Mountains and One River " (representing Yushan, Wushan, Pingshan, and the Minjiang River).
