[Tohoku, Japan] Kakunodate Samurai Residences: A miniature version of the Edo period atmosphere of Rikuzentakata, a small Kyoto

#Ancient Architecture

Kakunodate in Akita🇯🇵, northeastern Japan, is known as the "Little Kyoto of Mutsu". This is not only a castle town with a long history, but also a microcosm of the customs of the Edo period.

Although the area here is not large, only about 2 kilometers, it reveals traces of history everywhere. Along the main avenue, there are well-preserved samurai residences from the Edo period on both sides, which make people feel the majesty and dignity of the samurai class in the past. These mansions are open to visitors, offering a glimpse into the daily lives of samurai families.

There is also a rickshaw ride experience here, which allows visitors to easily tour the neighborhood using this traditional means of transportation, while learning about the background of these ancient buildings and enjoying the scenery along the way.

The charm of Kakunodate lies not only in its historical buildings, but also in the natural scenery that changes with the seasons. The cherry blossoms here attract countless tourists in spring, and the weeping cherry blossoms form a beautiful contrast with the black walls of the samurai mansion. I hope to visit Tohoku during the cherry blossom season next time.
