Sendai 🇯🇵Tohoku University Botanical Garden

#July Good Places 2025
This botanical garden is a natural botanical garden established by Tohoku University in 1958 (Showa 33) for research and education, with an area of about 520,000 square meters. This place is the hilly area of Mirito Forest behind the Sendai Castle site, commonly known as Aobayama, but since Date Masamune built Sendai Castle in 1600 (Keicho 5), there has been almost no increase in manpower until today, so the hills of the Sendai area have left behind the natural vegetation of the mausoleum - a beautiful forest of maple trees. As a suburb of a city with a population of 1 million, it is a rare area with rich nature.
In addition, there are many academically valuable things among the animals and plants in the garden, including this cherry forest. In 1972 (Showa 47), it was designated as a natural monument for the first time in Japan as a botanical garden.
