Held annually from August 6th to 8th, the Sendai Tanabata Festival is one of Japan's three major Tanabata festivals and a hallmark of Tohoku's summer festivities. The city streets and shopping arcades are adorned with vibrant, multi-meter-long paper decorations (fukinagashi) that sway gracefully in the wind, creating a breathtakingly colorful spectacle.
In addition to the street decorations, the festival features fireworks displays, stage performances, and market stalls, immersing the entire city of Sendai in a lively and festive atmosphere. The Tanabata decorations are often crafted collaboratively by schools, businesses, or local communities, each showcasing creativity and a sense of unity.
🚋 For transportation, the main events are concentrated around the shopping arcades near Sendai Station (such as Chuo-dori and Ichibancho-dori), making it easy to explore on foot. Visiting in the evening is recommended to enjoy both the daytime splendor and the illuminated nighttime ambiance.
